Overview

The ASCENDO THE18-2 Sub Pro Passive Sealed Shallow doubles the driver displacement of the THE16 Sub Pro by incorporating two 18" subwoofer drivers in a single passive sealed shallow enclosure. The dual-driver configuration significantly increases cone area and air displacement compared to a single-driver design of equivalent enclosure depth, allowing higher output levels and deeper extension before driver excursion limits are reached. Like the THE16 Sub Pro, the sealed alignment delivers precise transient performance preferred in reference cinema applications, and the shallow form factor enables integration into screen wall cavities and riser builds with restricted depth. As a passive design, amplification is handled externally — allowing a high-power, high-current subwoofer amplifier to be specified and installed at the equipment rack.

Pros & Cons

Strengths

  • Dual 18" drivers provide substantially more cone area and displacement than single-driver designs
  • Sealed shallow profile fits into architecture-critical custom cinema builds
  • Sealed alignment for tight, reference-grade transient accuracy
  • Passive design allows external amplifier optimisation and heat management

Limitations

  • Dual drivers require a high-power external amplifier — increases system cost and complexity
  • Sealed alignment needs more amplifier power for equivalent deep bass extension versus vented
  • Large and heavy — requires careful structural planning for screen wall integration

Kolosseum Design Perspective

Integrating the Ascendo THE18-2 Sub Pro in Reference Private Cinema

Kolosseum specifies the THE18-2 Sub Pro Passive Sealed Shallow in flagship cinema rooms where maximum displacement in a shallow-profile enclosure is the design goal. The dual 18" configuration delivers a significant step up in output versus single-driver subwoofers within the same footprint depth.

Room Requirements

Best suited to large cinema rooms from 60 m² upward where single-driver subs would be insufficient. Multiple units in a distributed array are often specified for rooms with complex modal behaviour.

Acoustic Considerations

The sealed dual-driver design allows high-power DSP bass extension techniques to be applied effectively. We account for room modes and seat-to-seat consistency in the subwoofer array design.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions About the Ascendo THE18-2 Sub Pro Passive Sealed Shallow Subwoofer.

The THE18-2 packs dual 18" drivers into a single shallow enclosure, achieving greater displacement in a smaller footprint than two separate enclosures would typically require. It simplifies installation while increasing output per enclosure unit.

Contact Kolosseum for current wiring configuration details. Typically dual-driver passive subs can be wired in parallel or series to achieve the target impedance for the chosen amplifier.

A high-power subwoofer amplifier capable of driving the combined driver load — typically 1000W or more into the combined impedance — is recommended. Kolosseum specifies amplifier pairing as part of the system design.

Yes. Mixing passive and active subwoofers is a valid design approach. A room processor such as Trinnov or StormAudio manages level, delay, and bass management across all units.
